(c. 1840–60)

Same tape trim is also above the ruffle on the bottom edge of the cape. The cape flairs just above elbows via a 4" deep gathered ruffle around the bottom that has an added 2¼" brown/black silk fringe on the bottom of the ruffle. There is a seam along each shoulder with small triangular gussets at the bottom just above the ruffle. The cape drops to a point in front and back, and measures 23½" long in the center back.

Condition: Cape is in good condition with some scattered 'pinholes'. The worst area is in the bottom ruffle where there are several small holes grouped on each side of the front opening. Damage is not noticeable, except upon close inspection and the cape displays well.

PURPLE AND BLACK SILK DRESS (worn during pregnancy?)
(c. 1860–65)

: HOLD :
Description: This stunning hand–sewn dress of black silk with purple stripes has been enlarged by removing the 4 darts in the bodice front and adding an extra strip of fabric under each arm at the side seam. There is no shape at all to the front of the bodice, and one has to wonder whether the dress was 'reshaped' to be worn during a pregnancy. The bodice has large, wide bishop sleeves with turned–up half–cuffs and a deep cap at the shoulder. Both cap and cuffs are trimmed with black silk–covered buttons and there are buttons decorating the lower half of the sleeves. Bodice closes in front with hooks and eyes, and is lined with medium brown polished cotton and sleeves are lined with dark brown polished cotton. The very full skirt is 42½" long and 166" in circumference.

Condition: The only damage to this beautiful dress are several small holes in the back of the lining of the bodice. Otherwise, this dress is in very good condition.
